Chaiti is a semi classical genre sung in Varanasi and Bihar-UP border of India. Formely being a Folk lore has now been incorporated into mainstream Classical music under the semi classical genre. Chaiti being sung and composed by females and Chaita being sung and composed by males are sung in the month of March to April knowm as the Chaitra Maas. In Varanasi the month of Chaitra is considered an auspicious and a festival is organised primarily by the locals of Varanasi; where they would gather to sing Chaiti's and Chaita's portraying the beauty of the simple lives of the natives.

Chaiti is a blend of Bhojpuri and Braj bhasha; the lyrics of which portrays the life of young ladies listening to the Koyelia singing in a sorrowful mannar in a gloomy afternoon and their hearts getting melted after listening to that; which reminds them of their husbands or lovers not being around. Also chaiti can portray the happy mood of the wife celebrating the home coming of their husbands with her friends (sakhis) wearing colourful Sarees. Chaiti is sung in a particular Dhun generally set in Ragas like Mishra Manjh Khamaj , Jhinjhoti , Kafi & Bhairavi and taals like Deepchandi.

Chaita as mentioned earlier was sung and composed by males. But over the time this art form has almost become endangered or we can even say that, it has become extinct. That's why it is now not included into the mainstream semi classical genre.

Chaiti also has the phrase "Ho rama" in order to show respect to Lord Rama when he came back to Ayodhya after his 14 yrs of Banavas. This phrase has become a significant feature of this art form. The Laggi of the Chaiti is also a major attraction for the audience as it is very much different from the laggi played with other genres. Here each stanza of the Chati is sung a in between a small piece of Laggi is used to break through the monotony of the song. And at the end the laggi is played in a bit faster tempo for enhancing the beauty of the Chaiti.
